yea this is absolutely just the wrong way to do this...
you need to transcode 5d mk II footage to prores (which version depends on your mac) then import and just drop a clip to a sequence and it will adjust the settings for you
One thing is certain, you absolutely do not edit h.264 natively in fcp and it is a mistake to do so
